A MISSION BORN FROM PASSION
Founder and Executive Director of The Miracle League Dane County, Bill Schultz, had a passion for baseball as a boy. He played pick-up games with his neighborhood friends on an empty corner field each summer.
When the boys turned eight, they became eligible for Little League tryouts and the boys drilled hitting, fielding and throwing in preparation for tryouts. Bill excelled at drills, but when he arrived the next day to learn team assignments, Bill was devastated to learn he would not be allowed to play in the league due to his physical disability.
Because of congenital deformities, Bill’s right leg had been amputated shortly after birth. His left arm and hand were shorter and smaller than normal. Since the age of two, Bill has worn an artificial limb. Despite developing substantial mobility, Bill was denied the chance to play baseball and participate in the game he loved.

THE MAGIC BEGINS
In 2018, Bill and his wife caught an “Inspiring America” segment on NBC Nightly News about a national organization called The Miracle League that builds an inclusive baseball field for children with physical and/or cognitive disabilities in communities internationally. Bill knew he was made to make this happen in the Madison area.
The opportunity to help disabled children experience what he was unable to do as a child inspired Bill to bring a Miracle League field to Dane County and make the dream a reality.
FIELD OF DREAMS
Our field features rubberized turf offering children with wheelchairs, walkers or difficulty walking the experience of the game. Each player has a buddy, volunteers who help each child hit, throw, field and score a run giving families the rare opportunity of watching from the stands.
The Village of Cottage Grove offered land to build the field at Phoebe Bakken Park as part of the village’s expansion plans. Over $500,000 was raised locally to build the field and construction began in the fall of 2020.
